A documentary telling the unlikely story of how Bristol became a world-leading ‘smart city’, with a digital infrastructure better than most capital cities.
The film delves into the history of Bristol’s rebellious, community spirit and how this thread has followed through into planning for its future, utilising open data and energy innovation to become a city that’s ready for tomorrow’s needs. We meet all sorts of Bristolians, who share their insight into how the spirit of the city is driving huge improvements to its infrastructure.
I directed this project, which involved a lot of archive research into Bristol’s past. Working with Nokia as part of a series of profiles on other smart cities, I wanted to bring out Bristol’s personality; it’s humour, it’s optimism and it’s camaraderie, contrasting this against the sterility of our idea of successful future-facing cities.
